Event Synopsis

Excitement is growing that the industrialisation of Fusion Energy is now closer than ever - with many expecting net positive power will be obtained from fusion in the 2030s.

Bay Fusion will be hosting another Industry Event at the Whitworth Gallery, Manchester on the 27th June 2023. The event will provide an overview of the different approaches to fusion that are being pursued in the UK and what this means for the supply chain - including new cross sector opportunities. The event is a chance to connect in-person with the fusion industry and find out how your company could get engaged in this exciting new industry, especially Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs).

In the north west we have a number of academic, public and private organisations playing a key part in the race to create what could be a game changer in the fight against climate change. Our event will showcase these activities, and will provide an opportunity to look at potential for many industry sectors at all levels to get involved with both the development and industrialisation of fusion.

Public and private investment in fusion technology around the world is skyrocketing, and many fusion start-ups are being created as confidence grows that we are at a pivotal point. In 2022, according to industry experts $500million was invested into the fusion industry and its supply chains, and this is expected to rise to $7billion as prototype fusion power plants such as STEP are developed . Bloomberg estimates the value of the industry to exceed $40trillion if it can generate just 1% of global energy demand.

This event is suitable for organisations of all types and industries who want to learn more about the global race to develop fusion power and supply chain opportunities. Light refreshments will be provided throughout the afternoon.

Agenda

We will be joined for an afternoon of talks with speakers from UKAEA, Kyoto Fusioneering, First Light Fusion and other key players in the emerging fusion sector around the UK and north west. We are also joined by a number of innovative businesses in the north west nuclear arc and future fusion supply chain. Speakers from regional academic and other research organisation will also help detail the current R&D landscape of this promising industry and its potential for growth.

Launch of Bay Fusion North West Fusion Cluster

During the afternoon sessions an underlying theme will be the launch of our regional industry cluster focused on fusion. It is predicted that for fusion to be implemented on a large scale, the global industry will require a diverse supply chain, including a significant base of SMEs to provide specialist and emerging technology expertise. Bay Fusion wants to ensure we have a robust future fusion supply chain in North West England, the birthplace of the commercial nuclear power generation industry, and will be inviting more members to join our Cluster to play their role in this exciting growing industry.

Networking Event and Refreshments

There will be a number of networking opportunities throughout the afternoon where there will be opportunity to talk with representatives of key fusion industry players, existing nuclear supply chain and also connecting with other businesses who wish to explore opportunities in the industrialisation of the growing UK and global fusion industry.

After the networking event, there is also an evening public talk covering the principles of fusion technology, the future of the industry and careers. See our other event listings for details.
